Hints & Tips

Owner hints and tips about living locally appear here. Some may start as conversations heard (or overheard) around the Club, others may move here after discussions on the Owner's Bulletin Board.

If you have a good idea, send it to email recommendations. We'll pass it along.

"We would like to recommend Ely Courier Service to those lodge owners that have bought/want furniture moving from the UK to France.  Iain and Paula Simpson recommended this company, as they had been enormously impressed with them earlier this year when they delivered their shed.  Iain said that this company actually picked up the shed and had it delivered to Souillac 48 hours later, at a very competitive price.

We contacted them when we got home from our half term break in Souillac in early June,to have a table and chairs delivered for our balcony.  They responded to our enquiry by return, collected the table the following week and delivered it within 48 hours – all for a very competitive price.

We would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them and they said they would be delighted to help fellow owners with any sort of deliveries."

Wireless internet

We successfully installed wireless internet in our lodge after buying a Dlink router (DIR 300) from Quimat in Cressensac (45€). Wireless routers are also available from Amazon.fr. The key thing is to know whether your router has an integrated modem which connects to the phone system or not. The DIR 300 does not.

There are a few quirks to the setup due to the login/password system used by the Club. These hints might make your installation go more smoothly:

  1. Use the supplied quick setup disc. Instructions are in a variety of languages.
  2. Attach the new DIR 300 to the existing ADSL modem/router in the lodge. The setup instructions explain how to do this.
  3. Accept all the default settings during setup.
  4. I recommend using security so that nearby lodges can't piggyback on your connection.
  5. At the end where it "checks the connection" it may give you a message saying it failed. Ignore this. It cannot pass the login or password to the server so cannot connect to the Club's internet. Click CANCEL and EXIT. You're done.

Disconnect the ethernet cable from your computer and try it out. Besides the flexibility of being able to use your computer anywhere in your lodge, a wireless router lets you access the internet with multiple computers at the same time. If one is logged in, the rest piggyback on the connection (this is why I recommend setting security during setup).

If you get stuck, Quimat will install it for you (for a fee).

Medical

If you need to see a doctor while at the Club, the following may be of some assistance. I saw Dr. Jouen in his surgery opposite the post office in Souillac. He speaks a little English. He charged me 25 euros (he accepts credit cards) and gave me a form to enable me to reclaim.

I took his prescription to the pharmacy who in turn gave me another form to which they attached the stickers from the prescription. I then completed my name and address details on both forms and obtained a copy of my EHIC card (this is the European Health Insurance Card - like the old E111. See websiteehic.org.uk.)

I sent this, together with a RIB (giving details of my bank account in France) to CPAM, 238 rue Hautserre, 46000 CAHORS. The refundable amount will be credited direct to my bank account.
